Another light air day on the Schooner Woodwind II. The first cruise had wind, and the others had enough to sail up wind but motor downwind.
All through the day we saw tons of birds. And lucky for us, we had Don, our bird enthusiast, aboard as crew. We saw cormorants flying in V-shaped formations to Greenbury Point. We saw many ospreys chirping away looking for fish. Many more gulls than normal, too. Even terns were diving into the Chesapeake and grabbing at fish.
But the coolest birds we saw were the Blue Herons. On the sunset sail, the races were canceled, for lack of wind, and we motored up the Severn Rover. The other captains were telling me of a Blue Heron’s roost in Chase creek, so off we motored to check it out.
Just as we made the turn into the wider portion of Chase Creek, up in a very dead tree, were 3 very large Heron nests. With Herons in them. This was so cool. I backed down and just sat there for a couple of minutes so all the guests could see. What was so neat was that the tree was silhouetted by the sunset in the background.
Very nice day on the water. Hopefully, in the coming days the wind blows harder.
