Schooner Woodwind

Thank you for a great sailing season. See you in April 2025!

Schooner Games

It was a busy day in Annapolis today, Memorial weekend and Commissioning week.  Woodwind II sailed with several Midshipmen due to graduate this Tuesday.  Many congratulations to them, what an accomplishment!  We took them and their families for a great view of the Navy Cruiser Gettysburg, anchored off of Annapolis. Weather forecasters, totally wrong!

Much to our enjoyment, the weather forecasts proved inaccurate today.   Hooray for sunshine and 15+ knots of southerly flow!   After sailing the paint off Woodwind II all day, we beam reached into the sunset over the Naval Academy- a blissful end to an big day of sailing.   As the sky warmed into some pink … Read more

Ghosting Mahogany

Woodwind II celebrated the sunset ghosting through Weems Creek.  I was thankful for the idyllic presence of two great blue herons.  They took the edge off the sight of the algae bloom that has cursed Spa Creek lately.  If you live in the Chesapeake watershed, please do your part.  Save the Bay.

Sun Dog

Wwhhhhhhooooeeeee, there was a lot of athletic activity around Annapolis today!  The morning preparations aboard Woodwind  were accompanied by rock’n’roll tunes floating over Ego Alley from the Triathalon celebration.  That got us stoked for the forecasted southerlies and the day’s high pressure.  After getting underway, we were able to catch some of the racing action … Read more

Heavy Seas

Sunset sail with Heavy Seas Brewery.  SSE 25kts, Woodwind II making 10kts of boat speed!

Ship Spotting!

Well, spring is in full swing on the bay!  This time of year reminds me how fortunate we are to be able to live and sail on the Chesapeake.  It makes me proud to meet people and see cruisers and visiting ships that choose to visit Annapolis.  We’ve really got something special here!  I love … Read more

USCG Cutter

We met the USCG Cutter James Renkin as they were entering the Severn River today.  Later, we caught up with them alongside the Naval Academy, and watched them change some buoys!  They pulled the old navigation aids, and replaced them with clean buoys with fresh paint.  Let’s hope the seagulls show a little respect for … Read more

Sweet Sixteen

The Woodwind crew welcomed frequent sailor Michelle back aboard for her first sail of the season.  We made way in dying southeasterly breeze toward the northern fleet of the NOOD regatta…just in time for the abandonment after 1 race today.  Hurray for diesel engines and lively crew of guests.  First time sailor Brinn was aboard … Read more

Matchrace and Mandolins!

The NOOD Regatta starts today!  I spent yesterday evening catching up with friends that are in town for the races.  Yesterday’s sailing aboard Woodwind II let us witness many crews practicing for this weekend’s competition.
