Please don’t misunderstand, there was no emergency today. May 1, commonly referred to as May Day, is the traditional spring
holiday. Sure, around Annapolis, the tradition of burning socks on the spring equinox is more popularly celebrated. Still, May Day is a fine reason to grab a friend for a beer and a sail.
After yesterday’s voluminous rainfall, we had ideal spring conditions on the Chesapeake: warm sunshine, a cool southeasterly flow, and flat water. This was enough to lure the Schneider family and our frequent sailor Sandra aboard the boat.

Don Shappelle performed on the boat this evening. Hailing from the headwaters of the Bay on the Susquehanna River, the essence of Don’s music is the Chesapeake. This dude has brackish blood. Don performed his well known “Tugboat Song” and retooled Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere” as a tribute to the endless list of creeks, towns, points, beaches, and gunkholes around the Chesapeake region. It was special listening to Don’s music surrounded by the inspiration.
We had some fun people aboard to share the sunset and the music. Roy and his wife were celebrating their honeymoon
aboard.
And, Dan and his girlfriend took the helm and sailed us back into the harbor.
I can’t resist this parting shot…After we landed, the Motoryacht Martha Ann got underway! She’s been sitting at the Annapolis Yacht Basin for weeks. The twin Caterpillar 2010hp engines were finally humming!! Some sailors scoff at motoryachts, sport fishers, jetboats, cigarette boats, runabouts, cabin cruisers- motorboats in general. I say get underway on everything 🙂
