Seasonal Dock Staff – Schooner Woodwind & Woodwind II

The schooner Woodwind operation in Annapolis is entering an exciting new chapter as part of 59º North Sailing. While this role does not include sailing or responsibilities with the 59º North offshore program, it is a critical, front-line position that helps ensure safe, efficient, and welcoming dock operations for our vessels, visiting boats, and waterfront guests.
Dock staff are the connective tissue between the boats, the dock, the customer service team, and the hotel and restaurant partners. We’re looking for people who are comfortable working outdoors, enjoy being around boats and people, and take pride in keeping things running smoothly in a busy waterfront environment.
This is a seasonal position, ideal for candidates who enjoy hands-on work, variety in their day, and being part of a coordinated, professional dock team.
Dock Staff Responsibilities
- Handle dock lines for Woodwind and Woodwind II
- Assist with docking and undocking of visiting boats
- Coordinate wharf-side space to accommodate commercial, transient, and overnight dockage
- Collect payment for transient dockage
- Assist Customer Service staff as needed
- Assist Woodwind crew and maintenance staff
- Support hotel and restaurant guests by providing information and assistance related to:
- Schooner Woodwind
- Water taxi services
- Local area knowledge
- Dock space availability
- In emergency situations, be willing to adapt normal duties to help secure business property, assets, and/or vessel safety
Background & Experience
The successful candidate will have experience in boating, hospitality, and/or customer service, and will be friendly, organized, and safety-minded. Familiarity with dock operations and working around boats is strongly preferred.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Excellent oral communication skills
- Knowledge of boats and standard docking practices
- Ability to work outdoors for 10–12 hour shifts
- Proficiency with knot tying
- Alert, reliable, and consistent work habits
- Ability to complete daily checklists and bi-weekly inventory checks
- Openness to new ideas and ability to work as part of a team
- Maryland Boater Safety Certification (must be obtained prior to employment start date)
- Strong local knowledge of:
- Annapolis
- The Chesapeake Bay
- Ability to count cash tips and report accurately during clock-out
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs repeatedly
- Ability to safely use a hand truck
- Ability to catch and throw dock lines
- Ability to load and unload a pickup truck
- Strong ability to prioritize workflow in a dynamic environment
- Physical agility to tie up boats to pilings and cleats
- Comfort working closely with other employees in tight quarters
- Comfort working around large groups of customers, restaurant, and bar patrons
- Easygoing demeanor with the ability to remain calm and professional during conflict or high-pressure situations
- Good time and space management skills
Compensation
- Hourly wage: $15.00/hour, plus tips
- Average hourly earnings of approximately $18/hour including tips
- Work commitment incentive available for qualified employees
