First Day of Sailing!

Our first day of sailing went well. The weather was perfect with partly sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. The wind was 12 to 18 knots from the south. It was nice to see the boats filled to near capacity with friendly happy sailors. Sumner and his wife (is it Sandra?) and Susan Helbert joined us. Before we started our scheduled cruises, we left the dock to watch Matt Rutherford’s return from a 300+ day round the world cruise in his 27 foot sailboat. He sailed that boat over 23,000 miles in some of the roughest waters in the world.

We set sail under perfect conditions and tacked out of the harbor. We were delighted to watch three Moth sailboats flying along on hydro foils. Boy, they are fast! We then cleared the “A” marker and headed for the Bay Bridge. Along the way we saw several regattas including a group of Lasers. Going under the Bay Bridges is always such a thrill. We tacked under the second bridge and then headed back, leaving several sailboats in our wake. Captain Mickey sailed Woodwind all the way into the harbor and dropped sail with the help of our enthusiastic crew right next to the Eastport Bridge and then motored back the dock.
