Sediment and the Chesapeake

August 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$75.25

Sediment is an important component of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Often viewed as a pollutant due to its impact on water clarity and potential to settle on bottom dwelling flora and fauna, sediment also has positive aspects in the estuary. The talk will cover a range of sediment related topics focusing on sources (watershed, shore erosion, oceanic), estuarine circulation and sediment transport processes, and effects on the ecosystem. The long-term history of the Chesapeake will serve as a backdrop to current understanding of sediment in the estuary.

Mr. Halka is the former Director of the Maryland Geological Survey (retired). His career focused on sediment in the Chesapeake Bay including sources, transport processes and deposition. He also developed the history, in geologic terms, of the Chesapeake estuary over the last ~½ million years. He applied his knowledge to addressing present day issues facing the Port of Baltimore regarding channel sediment dredging and placement of dredged material. As well, he chaired the EPA – Chesapeake Bay Program Sediment Workgroup, which developed policies related to sediment as a “pollutant,” and he participated in the Bay Program Nutrient and Modeling Subcommittees to see those policies integrated into applications.
