Coastal communities from New England to the Chesapeake relied on oysters when crops failed or supply lines faltered\, and the Bay’s bounty in particular allowed settlements like Annapolis and Baltimore to grow into stable ports with access to international trade. Seafood\, especially oysters\, supplemented diets in the colonial and early national periods\, helping communities survive periods of scarcity and rapid population expansion. This reliability made oysters part of the economic foundation that allowed the young republic to establish itself along the Atlantic seaboard\, anchoring early urban development and sustaining labor forces that built the region’s maritime economy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion title_tag=”h5″ section_title_tag=”h5″ color=”sky” spacing=”20″ active_section=”36″ no_fill=”true” collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Click on Edit Section to Change Title” tab_id=”Change-title-use-dashes-and-spaces2738-e4a1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”About” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]I am text block. Gareth’s expressive voice cuts straight into the core of his listener’s emotions. The passion in his singing\, along with the relatable lyrics have brought fans along with him on an extraordinary musical journey. Through Asher’s music he brings together a community to make this world a better place. \nAsher\, son of musical parents\, latched onto rock and roll before he turned five. He grew up in the Appalachian foothills of West Georgia\, listening to his parents’ rock and roll band and singing along with the records of great artists like Don Henley\, Jackson Browne\, Bob Seager\, and Bruce Springsteen. The day he picked up a guitar and strummed it\, he knew he’d found his instrument. Passionate about singing\, he wrote his first song at age 15 and was jamming with local performers as soon as they would let him in the clubs to play. He continued working on his songwriting and guitar playing while a student at the local university and soon became the featured entertainer in local venues\, where his passionate voice delivering original lyrics—the kind that makes you want to sit up and listen–quickly developed a loyal audience. \nGareth began his professional musical career in 2002 as the lead singer in the four-piece guitar-driven alternative rock band\, Illbreak. Illbreak’s debut album on Imprint Records\, The Flood was released in 2005. It was around that time that Asher put out his first solo record\, No Reality. In addition to releasing multiple records over the years\, Asher has several collaborations including Get It Right featuring Nappy Roots in 2011\, and One Day featuring Niko Moon in 2014. \nOne of Asher’s greatest collaborations began in 2011 when he crossed paths with Nicki Thrailkill. These kindred spirits then went on to perform as Gareth Asher + the Earthlings and then in 2017 as Ink + Ash. They released Defend the Flame in 2019. Now in 2022\, Gareth has returned to his roots as a solo artist and is anticipating recording a new album very soon. \nAs a touring artist\, Asher has shared the stage with Shawn Mullins\, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket)\, Emerson Hart (Tonic)\, Angie Aparo\, Corey Smith\, Sister Hazel\, Collective Soul\, 3 Doors Down\, Steve Cropper and many more. \nAsk fans what they like best about Gareth Asher and they have a simple reply: the passion in his voice\, and the lyrics they connect with. \n“Gareth has the most soulful voice I have ever heard. The first time I heard his music I just had to stop and take it in. I imagine that is what it was like for those who heard Ray Charles or John Lennon for the first time.” – Holly Firfer (92.9 Dave FM On-Air\, Atlanta & Company)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”29107″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:History of Watermen on the Chesapeake
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row gap=”35″][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]James Ronayne is a sophomore at Cornell University\, majoring in Environment and Sustainability with a focus on Environmental Law. He is an environmental photographer\, conservationist\, and storyteller. Ronayne’s photography is heavily influenced by the Chesapeake Bay and the watershed region. His photographs highlight the working men and women of the Bay and the environmental issues he champions. Ronayne is a regular columnist and staff photographer for Chesapeake Bay Magazine. He worked for the Coastal Conservation Association and has been a volunteer with Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s oyster gardening program since he was a young boy. He is actively involved in the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance and has testified before the Maryland Senate and Atlantic Fisheries Commission on environmental issues. He has prioritized bridging the gap between policy wonk and waterman with the common goal of maintaining a healthy Chesapeake Bay. \nRonayne’s boat\, PorkChop\, has given him the opportunity to see things on the bay that many people don’t get the chance to see. He realized early on that you can tell a powerful story through the lens of a camera. Through this literal lens Ronayne tells the story of the Chesapeake Bay and her waterways\, the living things beneath her surface\, and the people who work and play on her.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Details” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nHistory Monday Sunset Sails occur every Monday\, May-September 21.\nDifferent topics and speakers vary throughout the season.\nOur bar includes a selection of Craft Beer\, Wine & Bubbly available for purchase!\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1772740192598{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 25px !important;padding-right: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;padding-left: 25px !important;background-color: #dff2fe !important;border-left-style: initial !important;border-right-style: initial !important;border-top-style: initial !important;border-bottom-style: initial !important;border-radius: 5px !important;border-color: #cfebfe !important;}” el_class=”beth-box”]Annapolis is known as a seafood hub on the East Coast\, famous for its fresh crabs and oysters.
Through this literal lens Ronayne tells the story of the Chesapeake Bay and her waterways\, the living things beneath her surface\, and the people who work and play on her.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Details” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nHistory Monday Sunset Sails occur every Monday\, May-September 21.\nDifferent topics and speakers vary throughout the season.\nOur bar includes a selection of Craft Beer\, Wine & Bubbly available for purchase!\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1772740477405{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 25px !important;padding-right: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;padding-left: 25px !important;background-color: #dff2fe !important;border-left-style: initial !important;border-right-style: initial !important;border-top-style: initial !important;border-bottom-style: initial !important;border-radius: 5px !important;border-color: #cfebfe !important;}” el_class=”beth-box”]Annapolis is known as a seafood hub on the East Coast\, famous for its fresh crabs and oysters. SUMMARY:Skipjacks Living Symbols of the Chesapeake Bay
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row gap=”35″][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]Susan Schneider\, raised in the historic seaport of Charleston\, South Carolina\, and formally trained in historic architecture\, now volunteers in the maritime community\, combining her passion for sailing with public education. She leads tours for several nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving Maryland’s iconic skipjacks. In 2025\, Susan spearheaded the return of skipjacks to the Annapolis waterfront by launching the Skipjack Heritage Festival at Sandy Point State Park—now an annual celebration of the Bay’s living maritime tradition.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Details” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nHistory Monday Sunset Sails occur every Monday\, May-September 21.\nDifferent topics and speakers vary throughout the season.\nOur bar includes a selection of Craft Beer\, Wine & Bubbly available for purchase!\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1774373772592{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 25px !important;padding-right: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;padding-left: 25px !important;background-color: #dff2fe !important;border-left-style: initial !important;border-right-style: initial !important;border-top-style: initial !important;border-bottom-style: initial !important;border-radius: 5px !important;border-color: #cfebfe !important;}” el_class=”beth-box”]More than 150 years ago\, Chesapeake Bay watermen began dredging oysters under sail from a shallow-draft\, single-masted wooden boat called the skipjack. Remarkably\, they still do.\nOnce\, thousands of skipjacks worked the Bay—Maryland’s ubiquitous oyster workboat and the backbone of a thriving seafood industry. Today\, only about a dozen remain\, still harvesting oysters much as they did in the late 1800s.\nBuilt for the Bay’s shallow waters\, skipjacks were simple\, efficient\, and affordable—powered entirely by wind and skill. With small crews and no engines\, they opened opportunity for generations of watermen and helped shape the culture and economy of waterfront communities across the Chesapeake.\nBut this living tradition is now at risk. Environmental pressures\, declining oyster populations\, and a changing Bay threaten both the fleet and the way of life it represents.\nThis talk explores what makes the skipjack uniquely Maryland\, why it was named the official State Boat\, and why preserving these vessels matters. At its heart\, the story of the skipjack is one of ingenuity\, hard work\, and community—and a race against time to ensure this proud legacy continues under sail.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion title_tag=”h5″ section_title_tag=”h5″ color=”sky” spacing=”20″ active_section=”36″ no_fill=”true” collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Click on Edit Section to Change Title” tab_id=”Change-title-use-dashes-and-spaces2080-7c71″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”About” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]I am text block. SUMMARY:The Life & Times of Chesapeake Bound (1763–1765)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row gap=”35″][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]Thomas Guay is the author of Chesapeake Bound\, a historical novel set in the uneasy years just before the American Revolution. Set between 1763 and 1765\, the novel follows indentured servants on a perilous voyage to America\, where storms\, sickness\, betrayal\, and even Barbary corsairs test their hopes for a better life—only to find themselves on the brink of revolution. \nTom spent years interpreting colonial history as a guide at the Charles Carroll House in Annapolis and has sailed the Chesapeake Bay for more than two decades.
Through this literal lens Ronayne tells the story of the Chesapeake Bay and her waterways\, the living things beneath her surface\, and the people who work and play on her.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Details” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nHistory Monday Sunset Sails occur every Monday\, May-September 21.\nDifferent topics and speakers vary throughout the season.\nOur bar includes a selection of Craft Beer\, Wine & Bubbly available for purchase!\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1772740742816{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 25px !important;padding-right: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;padding-left: 25px !important;background-color: #dff2fe !important;border-left-style: initial !important;border-right-style: initial !important;border-top-style: initial !important;border-bottom-style: initial !important;border-radius: 5px !important;border-color: #cfebfe !important;}” el_class=”beth-box”]Annapolis is known as a seafood hub on the East Coast\, famous for its fresh crabs and oysters. But how many people truly know where their seafood comes from and how it is caught? For generations\, Annapolis has been at the heart of the Chesapeake Bay’s seafood industry\, sustained by the hardworking watermen who have navigated its waters. Ride along to explore the rich history of seafood and the watermen of Annapolis\, their traditions\, challenges\, and the evolving relationship between sustainability and the seafood industry.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion title_tag=”h5″ section_title_tag=”h5″ color=”sky” spacing=”20″ active_section=”36″ no_fill=”true” collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Click on Edit Section to Change Title” tab_id=”Change-title-use-dashes-and-spacescb2b-723d”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”About” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]I am text block. This reliability made oysters part of the economic foundation that allowed the young republic to establish itself along the Atlantic seaboard\, anchoring early urban development and sustaining labor forces that built the region’s maritime economy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion title_tag=”h5″ section_title_tag=”h5″ color=”sky” spacing=”20″ active_section=”36″ no_fill=”true” collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Click on Edit Section to Change Title” tab_id=”Change-title-use-dashes-and-spacesf434-2bf7″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”About” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]I am text block.
