His formal training includes years of clarinet and symphonic band\, but he found rock and roll as a late-addition bass player in the High School talent show\, and never went back. SUMMARY:Sunset Sail with Ken Wenzel
DESCRIPTION:With the release of  “…Beneath Potomac Skies”  –  a 12-song\, full-band collection of moments and memories culled from time spent in Washington DC\, and many other locales – singer/songwriter/saxophonist Ken Francis Wenzel is eager to introduce his own roots-rock\, country jazz-tinged take on love\, learning\, and life in contemporary America. Featuring several guest appearances from some of the DC area’s finest musicians\, “…Beneath Potomac Skies” is the long-awaited follow-up to Ken’s 2010 debut acoustic EP\, “…This is Cross Kentucky”. With a slightly raw voice and sparse acoustic guitar\, that EP showcased the perspective and passions of a well traveled\, yet still searching singer/songwriter – one with a somewhat different story and background than most. \nBorn and raised in Champaign\, Illinois\, Ken studied classical saxophone at the University of Illinois before graduating from UNLV in Las Vegas\, NV with a degree in jazz studies. He spent the next decade playing all over the world: in Las Vegas casinos; on cruise ships in Northern Europe\, Africa\, and Asia; at Universal Studios in Osaka\, Japan; on national tours of Broadway musicals; at festivals including the 2004 Montreux Jazz Festival and 2010 Chicago Blues Festival; and of course\, in countless clubs and small venues. All the while\, he worked as an in-demand freelancer\, playing saxophone with artists both locally and nationally – including\, among many others\, Frankie Avalon\, Ben Vereen\, Bobby Parker\, and Carlos Santana. \nIn 2007\, tiring of the endless grind of freelancing and the narrow branding brought on by being considered “just” a saxophonist\, Ken decided to buy himself an acoustic guitar. They believe that the central Maryland Piedmont\, sitting at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains\, has the right mix of rolling hills\, rocky\, low-fertility soils\, regular breezes\, sunshine and rain to be the home of some truly delicious wines — wines that express the land in which they are grown\, enhance the food they accompany\, and most important of all are a joy to drink. \nEstate Winery: “In pursuit of making great wine\, we are fully committed to being an estate winery – every grape for every bottle of wine that we produce is grown on our farm and always has been.  The quality of a wine is determined first and foremost by the quality of the grapes that go into it\, so we take our farming very seriously. (OK\, that is just a nice way of saying that we are control freaks – we admit it).” \nSustainability: “We are also big believers in making use of the resources that we have and taking care of those resources so they will continue to be available down the road.  To that end\, we spend a great deal of time doing what we think of as farming the soil – making sure that the microbial life in the soil has a good mix of air\, water\, and nutrients so it can create a healthy environment for our vines.” \n\n\nSchooner Woodwind’s Dinner Cruises are a very casual affair. DESCRIPTION:Ship’s Company is a living history organization dedicated to the preservation of the American maritime heritage. They interpret many aspects of maritime life between 1775 and 1865. \nFor more than a decade\, the Ship’s Company Chanteymen have shared sea salts’ songs with tens of thousands\, all over the East Coast. Aside from being scurvy-free\, they portray the musical part of nautical life in the 1700s and 1800s. Many of their songs originally set a pace to keep ship crews rowing in time or doing rhythmic chores such as turning a capstan. Some just filled long hours or lonely nights at sea. Simple and direct\, wild and spirited\, salty and rough as a North Atlantic gale\, they were a reflection of the sailors themselves. Springtime in a glass. Paired with  Deviled eggs with Crab and Pancetta (2 per person) \nGuigal Cote Du Rhône Rosé (FRANCE): A classic Rhône blend of Grenache\, Cinsault\, Mourvèdre\, and Syrah.  A beautifully. A structured wine bursting with a complex array of red berry flavors. Paired with a Blackened Salmon piece over a Mint Pea Puree’ \nMasciarelli Collins Teatine Rosato\, Abruzzo (ITALY): An estate rosé made from three vineyard sites. A deep vibrant color with bold red berry flavors. Paired with Grilled Flank Steak Skewers with Sweet Chili Glaze (2 per person) \nCalvet\, Cremant de Bordeaux\, Brut (FRANCE): The Salmon colored blend of 90% Cabernet Franc and just a touch of Merlot is light\, crisp and perfumed.  It has a creamy mousse framed by red currant flavors.  Paired with a Chocolate Cake with a Strawberry Glaze  \nPrice: $81 per person.
